Posted @withregram • @anaisevents I was born in Africa, grew up in India, and have lived in the US for 25 years now. All along, I’ve lived a privileged life as a Southasian Indian woman - insulated from so many harsh realities. All along, I’ve seen bias towards others and (more often than I care to admit), have harbored some prejudices myself. ⁣
There have been so many times that I didn’t say anything because I didn’t need to say anything. That’s changing.⁣
It’s been very emotional watching the protests unfold in major cities across the country following the senseless death of George Floyd. The unrest we see is evidence of larger structural and systemic inequities that persist in this country. It is also a manifestation of the collective outrage and deep rooted PAIN many are feeling.⁣
Racism, intolerance and injustice affect the lives of individuals in this country, including many of our colleagues and friends. I’ve never had to think about race but I am 💯 guilty of ignoring it. ⁣
So here I am, checking my privilege - it is 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 I can do. I want to reaffirm my personal commitment to change my own prejudices, understand those whose lives and experiences are different, value inclusion and commit to always treating everyone equally, fairly and respectfully.⁣
⁣
There is much more to do so I’m learning and joining this social movement of our time. Donating, volunteering, and amplifying the message. The pretty pictures can wait.⁣

“About six years ago, when I began writing professionally, I wrote an essay about Mike Brown, a young black man from Ferguson, Missouri who was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, a white police officer. May 20th would have been Brown’s 24th birthday and I relate because we’re the same age. I was upset by his grisly murder because his life was cut short at a time when most 18-year-olds were just beginning their journey into adulthood. Like many, I was heartbroken and furious that Wilson was not convicted, especially because evidence pointed to him being the aggressor.📣

The history of police brutality on the black community is extensive and goes back much further than anything we have ever faced. I feel that most South Asians only care about racism when a racial slur is used or when we’re treated differently because of our ethnicity. Even then, our solidarity with black victims of systemic racism tends to be performative and there is still plenty of anti-black sentiment to go around in our community.🙅🏽‍♀️

Since the recent murders of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd, I am appalled by the tone deaf responses of non-black people of color across the internet, as well as their cowardice in addressing anti-blackness in their own communities. On a personal level, I’ve seen numerous South Asians on social media speak out on the matter, but ironically, these are the same people who engage in anti-black behavior.
